The Big O review by Xenogears

::Sigh:: Such a pity indeed. The Big O! in my opinion, is a very great anime indeed. Unfortuanately, my opinion means nothing to the thousands of savage Big O haters in the world. In fact, on this very day, I saw an anti-Big-O site that made me speechless with rage. This person had no good reasons for the show being bad. They said things like "Roger Smith wears a weird suit...which is weird" okay, how does this show that Big O is bad? It doesn't. The person also stated that Big O is a ripoff of Gundam Wing. This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read. Obviously this person was a Toonami-fanperson who has never seen any other mecha animes, so they assumed Gundam Wing was the only one. I know this, because Big O is 99.999999% different. (The only similarities are the fact that it is mecha anime).

The real reasons that most everyone hates the series, is because they only look at the art. "Oh it is a ripoff of Batman!" is what I've heard from countless people. >.< So what? It is just the art. If people would look deeper they'd see the story has a shockingly deep twist to it. This is only brought out in the last 3 episodes, which most people haven't watched, because they dropped the show after episode 1. I am obviously not one of those people, and I shall drop my rant right here.

Big O is an anime about Paradigm City. (Para-dime is the pronunciation) This city lost its memory forty years ago (the reason is partially revealed towards the end of the series) and only certain memories have been recovered. A few mechas called Mega-Deus' (Deus means God in multiple languages) have been found, and only a select number of people with the memories can do it. Roger Smith, the main character, is a negotiator, and with an android left with him by a dead professor, he does multiple tasks. This series is only a small 13 episodes, but certain producers have divulged info about the making of a second season. Eventually, the plot thickens, and everything changes. But you'll have to see that for yourself.

So the artwork is americanized...but everything else is great. Although the series lacks character development (which usually takes more than 13 episodes to occur), it makes up for it in plot. The music is a great blend of neoclassical songs, and the retro mecha design closely resembles a mix of art deco and 14th century gothic.

It has fairly decent action scenes, especially towards the end of the series, and the villains are all different and unique. This anime is highly recommended by me. Unfortuanately, it is off of Toonami, so it'll be hard to find, unless you download it.

Episodes: 13 of approx. 19 minutes each
