"
Okay, by the Order of the Emperor, I bring you Martian Sucessor Nadesico!"
But what sort of Nadesico fan would I be if I didn't do this in the proper Nadesico format? So,
3....2....1....
KABOOM!!!!!!!!!!
It's time to get to know the Nadesico!
Hello, it's Ayanami 42 and co. here again with another subsituted Ms. Fressange explains.
Today, by Order of TG Moses VI (For info see the Evabeast Forums here, I will host a special 'Get to know the Nadesico', one of the few Viewer friendly animes. "
Set in the early part of the 23rd century, humanity has reached the stars, possessing space colonies near Earth and fledgling communities on Mars. Until an attack by an alien race, known only as the Jovian Lizards, desimates the colony. Two years later the Jovians (Jovians refers to
something from Jupiter or any other large gaseous planet) have crossed the gap between Jupiter and Mars using their giant "Chulip" wormhole ships and have the United Earth Armed Forces on the run, defeat seems inevitable.
Enter Nergal heavy industries and the first civilian Space Battleship, the High Mobile Battleship Nadesico, code ND 001. The ship that has the potential to change the course of the entire war. However lacking a regular military crew, Nergal is forced to recruit the services of the general public, bringing in the experts of the fields needed. For example a freelance unliscenced mechanic as the Chief Engineer. |
|
However by a stroke of fate another young man named Akito Tenkawa finds himself on the ship of Misfits and Fools. Akito wants to become a cook and is willing to accept the dual role as a backup pilot for the Aestivalus (the serie's giant robots). Akito was formally a cook on Mars however two years ago he mysteriously crossed the distance between Mars and the Earth when the Jovians attacked.
|
But there's another twist. The captain of this menageri of insanity turns out to be none other than Yurika Misumaru, Akito's incredibly dense childhood sweetheart.
As the poor Manager of Operations, the incredible 11 year old Ruri Hoshino points out, "Idiots!"
And here as requested is a sample of one of these incredible and loveable characters, the incredible Izumi Maki, |
Izumi's first appearance on the show very much signifies her character: poetic, intelligent, resiliant and incredibly funny! (At least to me) The scene was introduce by an Aestivelas moving away from a space station that had just exploded. Behind it were towed three zero-G Aestivelas frames and a metal box. After it had docked it's pilot, Ryoko Syubero, eventually got round to explaining to her welcoming party consisting of the Captain, the security officer and several members of the security team, her name and that she was apparantly the obnly pilot left alive. She was wrong, first the second pilot Hikaru Amano, showed herself after setting off a ship wide alert after punching through into the shape with an escape pod. To which Ryoko replied, "Well, I guess two out of three ain't bad-"
And then Izumi stuck! Replying through her comlink by saying, "It is if your the third..." AFter showing her excitment at her continued existence Hikaru asked through the com where she was. To which Izumi replied, "Where am I? Where is anyone really? And as for the alive, well as Schrodinger would say: The answer is in the box! They all look towards the box that had been towed over and Ryoko gingerly pressed the release button on her remote.
With a gush of smoke and steam the box opened and a bedraggled figure rose from with in, gasping, "I live....I breathe...Ah ahahahaaa...so the cat IS alive!"
|
|
Ryoko then proceeded to try and slam her back inside. To which Izumi said, "There's no need to shut up again Ryoko: I've already been canned once today!" And she proceeded to cackled manically.
|
So you see she is somewhat insane. She is also the Black Mistress of puns, which you have to be 100 percent clued up on Japanese modern and pre-modern culture to stand a chance of appreciating, but she is still incerdibly funny, who else would strum a Ukelele whilst being flown in a shuttle through a firefight? But I assure you she is as loveable and heartening as she is completely bonkers! But also, Izumi is also at heart a very tragic character, suffering from the sadness of always being left alone by the deacesed, this may entail why she seems so genuinly insane than any other character. |
There you have it, Martian Sucessor Nadesico is a spoof anime that is virtually without rival, it takes the piss out of everything from Soap Operas to Star Trek, to Giant robot animes (it creates a whole fictional series to do that ) and uniquely itself. But take that away and you still have a rich if not especially mind bending anime that is filled with plot twists, romance, humour, insanity, otaku piss taking and action that makes Nadesico almost the opposite end of the spectrum from series such as Evangelion, from begining to its Movie ending. It also is a very considerate anime that explains vitrually everything about itself or leaves sufficiant clues to work it all out in tiem to catch the pun, thanks to the walking encyclopedia, Miss Inez Fessange.
My score: (I've tried my best to remove bias but see it and see what you think) 8/10
The movie was a bit too anti-climatic and did not allow Inez to finish her explanation and left the fans with more questions than when we started.
