Macross Plus review by Paladin

Story: 4

Let me start by saying this: You need no knowledge of the Robotech/Macross world to understand Macross Plus. In fact, you could have absolutely no understanding of Robotech/Macross and still understand, but you wouldn't understand it as well. Anyways, Isamu Dyson is off fighting aliens with his veritech squadron. But due to his, er... reckless behavior, he gets transferred to New Edward's Base on the planet Eden to be a test pilot in a project to decide the next veritech (the airplanes of Robotech that transform in to robots). Isamu discovers that his former best friend, Guld Goa Bowman, is the test pilot for the other veritech. Most of the plot ensues around these two charecters rivalry with each other about the project, and in their struggles to win the love of their other best friend, Myung Fang Lone.

The other parts of the plot revolve around Sharon Apple (whose is Myung, who also happens to provide her emotions), the incredibly hot, incredibly nude, incredibly insane artificial pop star of the galaxy, and her efforts to win the love of Isamu. Macross Plus is a story of friendship, and a story of A.I. gone horribly wrong.

Now, I'm kinda biased on the subject of Macross Plus, being that I love Robotech. But I must say, of everything, Plot is MP's weaker point. While it is a rather good plot, it isn't what makes you watch MP over and over agin (this coming from a person who's seen it 6+ times). It's a simple plot though, and it's done very well. The Relationship of Isamu, Guld, and Myung is absolutely confusing for basically the first two OVA's.

But through the third and definately in the fourth OVA, you begin to be able to put the pieces of the puzzle back together, until finally you have a complete puzzle. This was good because it sorta makes you wanna watch further so you can figure out why Guld's so angry, and why Myung is such a hottie, but still a psychotic bitch. And each OVA ends and begins at the right scene, helping to build this puzzle. What I didn't like, was that EVERYONE was in love with Sharon. It made no sense, and actually started making me confused as to why everyone liked her. Except for the fact that she's hot... and naked. And of course, in almost every OVA, there will be something to make you either just chuckle, or laugh your ass off. Whether it be 'nature' or 13 lunches, the humor's there. To sum it up, it's a story about friendship, AI. gone wrong, all ending with a sudden, rather bittersweet ending.

Animation and Music/Sound: 5; 5

Now, the version of MP I'm reviewing is the dubbed version, and, well, it blows goats hardcore. Translation is rather poor, and personally I really prefer the Japanese version much better. It seemed to me to be more adult. It's hard to explain, just go watch the subbed version and say 'F*** You!' to the dubbed version, ok? Sound was almost perfect. If there was something in the scene that would be making a noise (like a fish tank) you'll hear it. Then... there's the music. If you think MP's soundtrack is bad, I will hunt you down like the dog you are and beat you with the Stupid Person Whooping Stick! Well, not literally, but I'll dislike you, immensely. The music really adds to the atmosphere of MP (like Isamu and Guld's fist fight in the third OVA with the jazz). Except for Cowboy Bebop, this has got to be my favorite anime soundtrack ever. Kanno Yoko's music, most of which is supposedly Sharon's, is beautiful. With the soundtrack being a mixture of techno, trance, J-Pop, jazz, and euro, how can you go wrong? My personal favorites are 'Voices' and 'Information High'. If you have the chance, download these songs.

Now on to the Animation, and it can be summed up into a few words: ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! This is probably one of the best animated movies of all time. Everything from wind, to folding in clothing, to sweat, to details in a fricking plane are done exactly. It is one of the most beautiful animated pieces ever. And a lot of it can be rather trippy (see: the fold jump from Eden to Earth).
Then, there's the concert on Eden. This is one of the greatest scenes ever. In the closeup scenes of the concert, every single person is drawn individually. It was gorgeous, and Sharon, with her nakedness and trippiness, just adds to the scene. The fight's between Guld and Isamu in their veritechs are beautiful. Never think a veritech could do some kung fu type stuff? Well, you're wrong my friend. Horribly wrong.

Characters: 3.5

Some of the charecters in MP I really liked. Like Isamu, he is actually a lot like me. His basic philosophy of 'You won't know until you try' is a lot like mine, so I found it easy to relate with him. Except for the fact that I'm not good with women and am not a hardass, cocky, arrogant little hotshot. Guld was what one would call, er... nutso. He's always so angry, yet so calm and shy. He was a pimp in my mind. Then, there's Myung, my most hated charecter in this OVA. Not only is she the most whiny, most annoying bitch imagniable, but her VA had the WORST voice ever. True that has nothing to do with the charecter, but it still pisses the fuck out of me. So whiny, and when it's at it's highest point, it made me want to pierce my eardrums. And finally, there's Sharon, who happens to be my favorite charecter because she's hot, and really quite naked. :p

Total: 17.5

I give Macross Plus, a 4 out of 5. Out of five what? That's a good question. Give me some time and I'll have your answer. ~ Paladin
